My First Bitcoin Unveils Global Rebrand and Ambitious Worldwide Education Expansion
My First Bitcoin (MFB), a non-profit organization originally established in El Salvador, has announced a significant transformation as it rebrands and expands its mission beyond national borders. The initiative, formerly known as “Mi Primer Bitcoin,” is pivoting from local educational efforts to a global strategy focused on empowering educators and fostering decentralized Bitcoin learning communities worldwide.
From Local Roots to Global Reach
Founded in 2021, MFB launched with the aim of providing independent Bitcoin education in El Salvador. One of its cornerstone initiatives, the Bitcoin Diploma program, began in early 2022 and has since educated over 27,000 students. The curriculum covers essential topics such as the fundamentals of fiat currency, Bitcoin’s history, and practical applications of the cryptocurrency.
The program quickly gained momentum, and by 2023, its educational materials had been translated into 23 languages, enabling grassroots instruction across continents—from Latin America to Asia. This widespread adoption laid the groundwork for MFB’s decision to scale its operations on a global level.
A New Identity for a Broader Mission
As part of this transformation, the organization is retiring its Spanish-language name and will now operate exclusively as “My First Bitcoin.” This change reflects a commitment to inclusivity and accessibility as the initiative targets a global audience.
To support this broader vision, MFB has implemented internal restructuring. The team has adopted a fully remote, decentralized model, closing its physical office in El Salvador and appointing new directors to lead the organization into its next phase. This structural shift aims to facilitate collaboration across borders and ensure adaptability in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
Empowering Educators Over Direct Instruction
Rather than continuing as a direct education provider, MFB is reorienting itself as a facilitator. The organization’s new focus is to “teach the teachers”—developing comprehensive tools, pedagogical systems, and support networks that enable educators around the world to launch their own Bitcoin learning initiatives. These may include circular economies, local meetups, and community-led education hubs.
“Our ambition has always been to change the world,” said founder John Dennehy. “We started with one student, then a single city, then a country. Now, we’re ready to reach billions by enabling people everywhere to become educators and changemakers in their own communities.”
Shifting Local Operations to Local Hands
In line with its decentralization strategy, MFB will step back from its regular in-person meetups and events in El Salvador. These initiatives will now be managed by local collectives, allowing MFB to focus on broader, structural support rather than direct programming. The organization’s Public School Program in El Salvador, which had worked closely with the Ministry of Education, has also concluded.
Despite pulling back from these local activities, the organization’s foundational mission remains intact: to promote financial literacy, autonomy, and empowerment through Bitcoin education. The shift is not a retreat but an evolution—one that prioritizes scale, sustainability, and local ownership.
Expanding the Bitcoin Educators Node Network
Central to MFB’s new global strategy is the expansion of its Independent Bitcoin Educators Node Network. Launched in 2023, this initiative connects over 70 projects across 38 countries. Each “node” operates autonomously while contributing to a shared mission of spreading Bitcoin knowledge and fostering community resilience.
The organization plans to significantly grow this network by onboarding new educators, offering open-source curricula, and providing mentorship and resources. This decentralized model will enable communities to tailor Bitcoin education to their specific cultural and economic contexts.
The Importance of Decentralized Financial Literacy
MFB’s global expansion comes at a pivotal time for Bitcoin and decentralized finance. As governments and institutions around the world grapple with inflation, capital controls, and digital currency regulations, grassroots education becomes increasingly vital. By equipping individuals with the knowledge to understand and use Bitcoin independently, MFB aims to reduce reliance on centralized financial systems and promote economic empowerment.
Bitcoin education is especially critical in regions with limited access to traditional banking infrastructure. In such areas, Bitcoin offers not just an investment opportunity but a lifeline—a way to transact, save, and build wealth without intermediaries. MFB’s expanded mission seeks to make these benefits accessible to communities that need them most.
Curriculum Development and Open Access
Moving forward, MFB is doubling down on curriculum development. The organization is committed to making its educational content open-source and freely available in multiple languages. These materials are designed to be modular and adaptable, allowing educators to customize lessons for students of different age groups, literacy levels, and technological backgrounds.
The 2024 edition of the Bitcoin Diploma is expected to include updated chapters on Bitcoin security, wallet usage, self-custody best practices, and emerging developments such as the Lightning Network. There are also plans to incorporate gamified learning elements and interactive digital tools to better engage younger audiences.
Partnerships and Global Collaboration
To further its mission, MFB is actively seeking partnerships with organizations, schools, and grassroots initiatives. Collaboration with like-minded groups will allow the organization to scale its reach and create a unified global ecosystem for Bitcoin education. These alliances will also help to standardize quality across different programs and ensure that educators receive the support they need.
In addition, MFB is exploring collaborations with policymakers and educational institutions to integrate Bitcoin education into official curricula. While this goal remains ambitious, the organization believes that formal recognition of Bitcoin literacy as a necessary 21st-century skill is achievable through persistent advocacy and evidence-based results.
A Vision for the Future
As My First Bitcoin steps into its next chapter, it does so with a bold vision: an interconnected world where individuals everywhere have the tools to understand and utilize Bitcoin independently. The organization’s rebrand and global expansion reflect a deep belief in the power of education to drive change—not through centralized mandates, but by empowering local leaders to take charge of their own financial futures.
This pivot marks a new era for the Bitcoin education movement, one where knowledge is decentralized, accessible, and scalable. By planting the seeds of understanding in every corner of the world, My First Bitcoin hopes to cultivate a generation that is not only financially literate but truly sovereign.
